Kurt Schlechter from The Bartenders Workshop wins the "Tahona Society International Margarita Competition" in Mexico!

Kurt Schlechter and Derrick Hartman from The Bartenders Workshop competed in the first “Tahona Society International Margarita Competition” in Mexico that was held from the 30th of May 2010 to the 5th of June 2010. Kurt won the competition and his prize is a trip to New York to work in some of the top cocktail and tequila bars and present the drinks he made in the competition. My friends Margarita

Glass:
Rocks glass with cinnamon & Naartjie (Mandarin) salt lip

Method:
Muddle orange slice with skin in base of mixing glass, add rest of ingredients and shake with ice and double strain into glass over ice

Ingredients:
Orange slice
5 raspberries
55mls Olmeca Altos 100 % tequila Reposado
1 whole (small) lime squeezed
18.75mls (3/4 shot) Rooibos tea & vanilla syrup
12,5mls (½ shot) Cointreau

On the side:
shot glass with Slithers of Jicama (Mexican fruit with neutral taste) dipped in Naartjie (Mandarin) & cinnamon homemade salt

Garnish:
Pineapple leaves arranged in an agave plant style with naartjie & cinnamon homemade salt

For the Nose:
Using a atomizer spray a mixture of half dark blue agave syrup and Olmeca altos Reposado over the drink, be careful not to wet the salt lip in the process.

Olmeca Fresca (make two drinks)

Glass:
two rocks

Method:
Muddle grapefruit in base of mixing glass, add rest of ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into two glasses with ice

Ingredients:
1cm thick grape fruit wheel with skin
Half a lemon freshly squeezed
55mls Olmeca Altos 100% tequila Blanco
62,5mls (1.5 shots) agave syrup
Once you have shaken the mixture hard and strained, fill with sparkling water and stir with KNIFE!

Garnish:
Lemon & grapefruit twist

News Cafe Sandton Opening

After the long wait, the official re-opening of the Sandton News Cafe took place on the 29th of April. The Bartenders Workshop and Vodka Skyy served Vodka Skyy and mixer's to the 'who's who' of Johannesburg. Over 300 people attended the plush opening of this redesigned cocktail bar and were entertained by performances including Chix with Stix and Liquid Deep. The Style Bars were supplied by The Bartenders Workshop which helped make the event extra special.

Freedom Day Celebration

The Bartenders Workshop in JHB catered for the official Freedom Day Celebration at the Union Building in PTA on Tuesday 27 April. The VIP event was attended by Government Delegates. BTW served 500 VIP guests and supplied beverages to over 15 000 public viewers of the celebration.

Air Traffic Control Tower Launch

The launch of the King Shaka Airport Air Traffic Control Tower took place on 14th and 15th of April 2010. The event, which took place on the 16th floor of the tower, catered for 100 people per night. The delicious array of eats was provided by Eat Greek and the bartending services by The Bartenders Workshop. The bartenders served welcome drinks as well as a full bar service for the guests throughout the night.

Africa Bike Week

Africa Bike Week was held in Margate, where 80 000 people and 12 000 bikes attended the event that ran from the 24th to 27th April. It was a Harley Davidson, Jack Daniels and Millers sponsored event. The Bartenders Workshop ran 4 bars for the event, 2 bars at the main stage, a Contiki bar, as well as a RedBull bar. On Friday 23 April we had a press party for 200pax where we had a full bar, served wine and offered Lynchburg Lemonade cocktails as welcome drinks. We had a team of 15 Bartenders, 5 barbacks and 2 managers for the event.

Mothers Day Event

Fun in the SA sun with The Parlotones @ Menlyn. The Mother's Day Concert on the 9th of May was attended by over 2000 people at the Menlyn Event Arena. The Bartenders Workshop served both the public and VIP patrons. VIP guests were also spoilt with a granadilla, vanilla and pineapple collin's, sponsored by The Bartenders Workshop. The look and feel in the VIP area was also created by The Bartenders Workshop.

Good Food and Wine Show

The Bartenders Workshop team had a strong presence at this year's premier Food and Wine Show. The Good Food and Wine Show was once again extremely popular and was attended by more than 50 000 visitors. It was a very busy show for us as we ran and hosted various stands, listed below:

  • Brutal Fruit serving Berrylicous slush puppy tasters
  • Ipioca where our bartenders prepared flavoured Caipirinhia's using Ipioca Cachaca
  • Klipdrift Golf Hub where patrons had the chance to taste Klipdrift Gold and Premium and then have a shot at testing out their golfing skills at virtual golf.

The Bartenders Workshop interactive stand was one of the show highlights. Consumers had the opportunity to step behind one of our designer bars and make their own cocktails while being guided by a professional mixologist. A big thanks to our sponsor Roses Cordials and Monis Juices.

The Cape Town leg of the South African National Bartending competition was hosted by us in conjunction with The National Bartending Association. The stand was permanently full of spectators crowding around to see skilled bartenders showing of their flair and cocktail making skills. A big thanks to all the sponsors: Havana Club Rum, Giffard, Finest Call and BAT. Well done to all the winners especially our BTW boys who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the classic cocktail section. Dean Spencer 1st, Anton Bosman 2nd and Etienne Venter 3rd. They will be going through to the finals in Durban in November.

Soccer City Nedbank Challenge Final

At the sold out Nedbank Challenge Final at the newly built Soccer City on the 22nd of May, The Bartenders Workshop managed and ran the bars for over 80 private suites, including President Jacob Zuma's private suite. With our new client, Stadium Management South Africa, we have also entered into an agreement where by we run all cash bar facilities for Stadiums that SMSA manage. Over 70 000 patrons were served by The Bartenders Workshop at the cash bar facilities at this premier event.

Orlando Stadium Super 14 Semi’s and Final

The Cash Bars for the Super 14 Semi's and Finals at the Soweto Grounds, Orlando Stadium, were operated and managed by The Bartenders Workshop, where we served over 40 000 fans, ice cold beers and ciders. Included in the stadiums cash bars, The Bartenders Workshop JHB also operated and managed 2 beer gardens to aid the thirsty rugby fans. 9 private hospitality suites' bars were also attended to by the professional services of The Bartenders Workshop JHB.

KKNK

The KKNK was held from the 1st to the 8th of April 2010. The Bartenders Workshop managed and ran the bars at the Outiniqua High School and at the Huisgenoot tent. We had a 58 metre bar for the duration of the festival with 38 bartenders whom made sure that all at the festival did not go thirsty.

FIFA Promotional Ad

The Bartenders Workshop Eastern Cape has recently done a FIFA promotional TV ad for the Nelson Mandela Stadium at McArthurs swimming pool, which is currently showing on SABC. It was a fun filled day and our bartenders felt like superstars while they were under the spot light, making delicious cocktails.
